I was on the earlier 4 year HMRC scheme - there was a lot of book learning and exams, as well as soft skills development. They have reduced it to 3 years now and there seems less emphasis on exams, though they still have them.

I don’t think I appreciated it at the time, but I learned a lot, not just about tax but management, projects and negotiation and communication skills. I love the work and find it really interesting.

Do you still work for HMRC now? If so what what role did you go on to? If you don’t mind me asking.

Reply 42

Yes I am still in HMRC. You get put in a role - you don’t really get a choice when you finish the programme. I worked as a grade 7 tax professional with my own caseload. I have also managed multigrade teams since then. Most of my colleagues were caseworkers immediately on finishing. To an extent it depended which office you trained at and what grade 7s they needed.

I think they are now streaming early on, so you will specialise in say small taxpayers or large companies, rather than doing a whole range. I expect you can specify a preference but not sure.

Hey sorry this is off the topic, but I am interested in becoming a statistician for CS and was wondering what sort of tasks it entails or is it just basically handling loads of data? and are you looking for a change because you do not like certain aspects of the job?

I don't know if you're aware, but there are two stats related vacancies at the moment on the CS jobs board:

Statistical Officers in HMRC: https://www.civilservicejobs.service.gov.uk/csr/index.cgi?SID=c2VhcmNoX3NsaWNlX2N1cnJlbnQ9MSZwYWdlYWN0aW9uPXZpZXd2YWNieWpvYmxpc3Qmb3duZXJ0eXBlPWZhaXImdXNlcnNlYXJjaGNvbnRleHQ9NDU3NzQ5OTEmcGFnZWNsYXNzPUpvYnMmam9ibGlzdF92aWV3X3ZhYz0xNTU2ODEwJm93bmVyPTUwNzAwMDAmY3NvdXJjZT1jc3FzZWFyY2gmcmVxc2lnPTE1MDgwNzY1NDMtNTlmMTk4NjhjMDMyMDRjM2Q5MjMwOTY3MmU1MWFkMWRjNWJiMGNiNQ==

I know!! I'd rather be put out of misery. Lol

dont think this test is very good at judging ability (difficult to say why/how without giving the game away). Third time ive done it, same questions and I know the logic

Hey thanks I seen that but I was wary about whether to apply for it or not since I graduate next year and wouldn’t know when the job would start😞. But thanks!

With civil service/hmrc recruitment, I wouldn't worry about the start date being before the end of uni, incredibly slowly

Thank you! I’ll give it a shot and apply for it

Did anyone practice any tests before taking the verbal reasoning? I'm yet to take mine but can't seem to find the courage!

Slightly miffed. I took the verbal reasoning test for criminal investigator, and scored higher at 78%. All and I do mean ALL the questions were the same. I think I just answered slightly different on the odd question... 😑

I did the HMRC practice test before taking the test. As someone mentioned before I don’t think for verbal reasoning there’s a whole lot of practice you can do.

The NHS Grad Schemes opened earlier today. I applied for the Finance one and sat through all their tests. The Verbal Reasoning one was exactly the same as the one for HMRC Tax, by exactly, I mean literally the exact same questions. This seems like gross laziness on their part. Makes cheating easy. I guess all the tests will need to be retaken at the assessment centre anyway, still though, it's a bit stupid to have the exact same test for multiple Grad Schemes.

FYI - There was no feedback on the score for the Verbal Reasoning test for the NHS Finance Scheme.

Edit in - The Numerical Reasoning test was quite easy. My practice materials were actually quite useful for that. Makes me wonder if they'll use the same test for the HMRC one. There was also a Logical Reasoning and Situational Judgement test, however, these are irrelevant for the HMRC scheme.

I started my application for the NHS yesterday but haven't done the tests yet. Any tips on best way to practice for all of them?

I used 'practice aptitude tests' and flopped the e tray on the fast stream, i hope the questions are similar this time round with this scheme..............

Hi there! First time applying this year as graduating Uni in July so the timings align perfectly for this role (finally found something that sparked an interest in me after 3 years panicking doing a history degree with no idea what to do at the end)!

Completed the verbal reasoning test with a mark better than 60% of those who did it - from experience does anyone know where this would place me?

Also, this is clearly a very competitive programme so can anyone offer any advice? Thank you!

I have just completed the application. I then was told my application was on hold after the verbal reasoning test, without me having to take it! I did a verbal reasoning test in an application for another HEO post recently and was told my score would be banked for 6 months so they have obviously just used the result from that (I scored higher than 84% btw). Therefore I don't think the scoring can have anything to do with the people currently taking the test, but rather based on scores done by people previously. Seems a little unfair I didn't get to do it again to try and improve my percentage!

Thanks for posting this, I was putting off doing my application as I wanted to make sure I was prepared for the verbal reasoning test. When I read your post I realised I had applied for a HEO post a few months back, so did the application today and didn't have to do the verbal reasoning test either! I got better than 86% last time, I'm happy that score will be used for TSP too!

Hi This is my second year applying, last year I made it to the AC but didn't make it into the top 200 who they offered jobs to. I was however offered a Band O job to work as a Tax Professional. It seems the Band O jobs, from last year anyway were only offered to people who made in to the assessment centre, and the location your assigned to is a bit random and probably based on HMRC'S needs at the time, so there's no guarantee you'll get an O role in your preferred location.

Hi guys, first time posting here.

I'm already in the civil service at AO and have decided to apply for this (I hold a degree anyway so it's no issue either way) and was able to use my test score from a previous HEO job. Thankfully it's a high score of above 92% of previous people tested.

Of course my goal is to get as far in the process as possible, but does anybody know the possible promotion opportunities if you only get to, for example, the video interview or assessment centre? It seems previous posters have managed to land Band O jobs out of this from previous years?

I have got a provisional offer for an officer post from TSP last year. I passed all the tests, but didn't get high enough to go to the assessment centre. Hopefully it will be the same for people this year!
