Just tried to do it; but the there was no sound recording! Can’t get it to work. Will try on my husbands mac when the kids are on in bed. As if I haven’t got enough to do the week before Christmas.

No luck on the Mac. Going to do it on my phone tomorrow. Cutting it fine I know! But I’ll have more peace tomorrow. At least I can get a good angle and avoid a double chin.

I was having a similar problem (laptop), but I managed to get it working. Once the countdown begins, right click the area where you can see yourself > settings > then go to the mic settings, one where there's a slider and a red-to-green bar on the left > Just click the slider thingy, wiggle it a little. You should then see that the red-to-green bar has gone down and moves a little with audio. It thens allows for proper audio feedback in the practice question and should for the full answers (although you don't get to see those).

Keep in mind though, that you have to do that little fix EVERY time you re-record, and it only works after you hit record. So I had to do it during the 30 second prep on each question.

I hope this helps

I couldn’t even see the slider when I was on the laptop but may try again. I’m exhausted now though!

Not holding out much hope on the interview front. That was awful. Didn’t help that the microphone wouldn’t pick up sound on my laptop so then had to mess around doing it on my phone.

You're all concerning me re the sound - i did mine on a Mac but on practice sound was fine and played back ok - should I have done anything different with the actual recording?

.

I think it should be fine. I tried on the Mac, but during set up it was only picking up very low. Even after the resolutions they suggested. If yours was picking up fine, I wouldn’t be worried.

This happened for me too but it worked perfectly in the practice question. I just ignored it and hoping it's fine .

Did people use notes for the interview? Are they allowed?

This is my first year applying to this. Got through the verbal, numerical and sjt tests with scores of 97%, 94% and 73% respectively.

Just sat the video interview. Been suffering from a flu the past week so it wasn't an ideal time to do it. Think I made a mess of it overall. 3 out of the 4 questions were okay but the remaining one was awful. I couldn't think of an example. As soon as it started recording, I just stared blankly into the webcam for the first 30 seconds of that question. Finally managed to get words out but it just ended up being a nonsense made up scenario that I waffled on for for about a minute. Nightmare.

Honestly I think they should give you more than 30 seconds to prepare an answer. And more than one attempt per answer too. I mean, anything could happen when you're recording. I had to stifle back a coughing fit on account of my cold/flu during one of the answers.

Don't worry, honestly, I don't think they are harsh when it comes to assesing and you could have done better than you thought. If it helps I did my civil service fast stream interview and by the end of it thought I completely messed up but I got through to the assesment centre. Is it only 4 questions only? I haven't done it yet, I'm hoping to do it tommorow morning.

Just recorded mine. It was much tougher than I expected. Started off badly and one question I just couldn’t think. Wish there had been more questions because I started to get into it by the end and don’t feel like I got to say everything that I wanted to say

that was horrendous. I'm out

Same here Jess. For most of the first question I stared at the table in bewilderment! I think I muttered "I hate video interviews - I need feedback" at one point. I think I made a good job of one of the questions, but the other two were garbled nonsense. I'm genuinely gutted, but having attended no interviews in the past 20 years and never having attended a video interview it was probably inevitable.

To be fair I'm not sure I'd make a good job of those questions even if I resat them now!

Reply 773

I would much rather competency questions where I am able to show my how much actual experience I have didn't feel like I was able to do that at all. one of the questions I wish I'd stopped recording after 20 seconds and made the answer worse by trying to keep speaking.

Reply 774

I am really dreading this video interview. I reached the assessment centre stage of last year's HMRC Tax Professional programme and there was no video interview. I'm very anxious as I have never even used skype.

Reply 775

Wow. It was very tough because it's such an unnatural situation. I definitely cut at least one of mine off very early, did not go into detail. I tried not to look at the timer and I probably spoke for about 30 seconds although it felt like ages. My video is mostly me trying to press the stop button with looking away from the webcam!!

I massively overprepared my competencies and then I think I used one example and just went on a total random waffle of no substance.

Don't overthink it if you haven't done it just have some examples in your head - you don't even have time to think about whether you're meeting the competencies.

Reply 776

Oh and don't do what I did on the first question which was start talking after the 30 second countdown but the video didn't start recording for another 3 seconds as it tells you to look at the camera then does another countdown to recording. They're going to get 2 seconds into my first answer and bin me off because I'm half way through a sentence!!

Reply 777

Hi, Can anyone please tell me when they read out the questions/situations do you have to answer straight away or can you pause then answer?

Reply 778

I don't think you can pause it. It seems to go from question to question.

I just did mine there and felt it was horrendous. Really not happy with how I did. I prepared a few answers and only ended up using one of them, a couple of the questions really threw me.

You get a 30 second countdown and then must answer.

You don't have to access the next question until you decide to click Next, though.
