The wires leading from the mains supply in the street into a building have a resistance R of 0.2 Ω. The electrical potential difference of the mains supply in the street is constant and equal to 230 V. The electrical potential difference at the sockets in the building is not to drop below 225 V when electrical power is consumed.


i) Sketch a circuit diagram with the given figures noted on it.
ii) Calculate the maximum current, and hence the maximum power that can be dissipated in the building so that the potential difference at the sockets does not drop below 225 V.

I am not sure how to draw the circuit described in part i) Is there a circuit symbol for a socket? Is it ok to represent the wire's resistance as a single resistor?

For the socket symbol, I have found something in this way: link

If I do have this right, there is a resistance on each wire, a voltage of 230 V on the main supplies and 225 V as the minimum on the sockets.

Wouldn't there be 2 resistors if you were to represent the resistance of the wire as there is a wire connecting from the mains to the sockets and from the sockets back to the mains which would all be in series with the sockets, so the voltage drop in each resistor would have to be at most 2.5 volts as 230v = 225v + 2.5v + 2.5v and from there you can work out the maximum current in the circuit by looking at one of the 0.2 Ohm resistors
