do they expect you to have already had the whole thing before starting med school? because if so, since the hep b vaccination takes 7 months in total, i'd say feb/march is the latest to start

i've already had all mine done anyway

since we're on the topic, i went to my gp's to see the nurse and get her to fill the dates of these vaccinations and for the bit that says 'measles' she left it blank and said i'd had the mmr and this was different and that they don't do the measles one there. she said the same thing for the rubella one. i thought the whole point of the mmr vaccination was to immunise you for measles mumps and rubella?? can someone explain? maybe the answer's really obvious but i don't see it.

sorry to temporarily hijack the thread ffcru

So who has started their Hepatitus vaccination?

When do you think you should have this done by the latest?

I'm getting my first jab on friday :s-smilie:

Edit It seems like I cant spell Medicine in the title lol, I would change it if i knew how...

That's OK - you can't spell hepatitis either  (I realise with my spelling, that's rich!).

I'd encourage everyone to get started soonish. Certain med schools have been known to withdraw offers where people are not at a 'satisfactory' point in the hep B immunisation programme.

If you're an oldie, like me, you will have had a separate jabs for measles (as a toddler), and if you're a girl, rubella as a teenager.

MMR does indeed cover all (the hint is in the name!). I wouldn't worry about it, uyou will be tested in year 1 to see if you're immune to measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox.

yeah it's weird. i asked her if she was sure, because i'd had mmr years ago and i thought that covered it all. but she said no, i'd have to have a measles and a rubella injection somewhere. i shan't worry though if i'm going to get tested for it. thankies

I believe so, well I know UCL does anyway. They also want some tests done on the people who get offers...but details are said to be explained on getting offers. Do you think its needed for other medical schools? Well before the course starts anyway

Haha I've never really been able to spell well :p:

Hmm good thing I'm starting this week then
My GP surgery won't let me start until January. They're concentrating on flu jabs ATM so i can't have my hep B :frown:

Seeing as it takes 7 months, would you suggest starting the vaccination course even if you haven't had any offers yet?
Probably. Its always good to know that at least if you don't get in (which i'm sure won't happen) that there is one less illness thing for you to catch!!!

Just to confirm, we need to be up to date with:

Hep B, BCG, DPT and MMR? Right?
yeah get going with them if possible.... i needed another MMR for some bizare reason i was a member of the one and only year in just my borough of london that was given the MR rather than the MMR.... *******!!

I had my Hep B a long time ago thank god. Lets hope i don't need to have a booster.
you probly will if it was more than about 5 years ago....
Thank goodness for medical related degrees! I'm on my course, with my third one to be taken in April.

It'll make your arm numb though, and possibly bruise if you've been developing those muscles. It does feel a bit crappy, and mine was doubly sore having needed the typhoid vaccine also :frown:

Tsh, the Hep B was fiiiiine for me, as was the typhoid. The only one I felt groggy on was the MMR (I can't believe my mum didn't have me vaccivated!)

Oh, and no I'm not a medical student, just immunised.
Had my first Hep B jab done yesterday - had to pay for it as a private patient cos my surgery refused to vaccinate me, then they told me I could have just claimed to be going on holiday somewhere and been given the combined Hep A & B jab for free!

nu-uh. They don't give it to you free if you're going on holiday. Hep A and typhoid, yes, but not Hep B.

Got my first jab a week ago, I think it's the first vaccination I've had that's actually hurt (the way it spreads all over your arm I mean, not the needle) :s-smilie: But I was happy not to have to pay anything

I had to get some other jabs about a month ago and I asked about this... my nurse said she'll start me on the course February ish. And it's free cos I'm a student, hurrah!
