Why would it be good to close grammars? :s-smilie:

You can either go to the link which gives the reasons why, or alternatively read the opposing thread that calls for more grammars.

Within that thread there is a constructive and concise argument as to why all schools should admit children of all abilities.

To answer that you need to think a bit.

Yes, I will get you some crayons
They seem good but at the same time it seems people are not aware how to apply and are not approached, not where I live anywhere. I've never been asked about applying.

Catholic Grammar schools are a rarity, unless they are fee-paying. The reason they are a rarity is because we believe that every child deserves the best education available, not the few.

If every school had the sort of ethos that Catholic schools have every single child would not only receive a good education, but also emerge from them a well-rounded and confident young person.

But then, I am biased somewhat.

That's enough reading for me on this, there are more important issues that can be brought to Parliament's attention imo.

Eughh.... Yawn, give it a rest. I went to a grammar, am not loaded with cash, enjoyed my education and have a healthy relationship with my peers who did not go to said grammar school.

Question; why do you have this chip on your shoulder? Why are you so ardently anti-grammar? Don't give us general reasons, I want YOUR thoughts.

The corollary to the socialist doctrine that we should make everyone economically equal, even if that means making everyone equally poor, is to make everyone intellectually equal, even if that means making everyone equally stupid.

Hahaha, you are renowned for your intellectual snobbery, Bis.

That is what academically selective education does for some...makes them think they're somehow superior to everyone else.
yawn

And drag them down like Comprehensive schools? No thanks, If I'd had a choice, I'd've rather been in a school that had people with the same academic ability and at that age allowed me to work hard to my potential than waste my time and drag my grade down by others who couldn't graps concepts or who couldn't be arsed. When it gets to more independent learning then the onus is more on yourself but at that learning age I have no problem with it.

I'm not reading into the arguments because I have loads of legal ones I should be reading right now.

I shouldn't take too much notice of the propoganda that emanates from the pro-selection lobby of Kent.

Their results, considering their intake are leading to accusations of 'coasting'.

For definitive evidence read the research undertaken by Prof. David Jesson.

btw - Chris Woodhead is not regarded in high esteem in education circles.
Again...don't really have time. My opinion will suffice since I'm not really needing to put it to the test in the near future, compared to legal topics relevent to my studies.

That is a myth that is propogated without any sustantive evidence whatsoever.

Best you get on with your work then.

Personally, I think grammar schools are a good idea.

However I think the selection procedure (and age) is generally poor, and sometimes thick kids with pushy parents get in, whilst some clever kids don't. IMO the fault is with the selection procedure, not the grammar school system.
N. Ireland for example has many grammar schools and the exam results attained by pupils exceed that of the mainland thus surely that is an indication that grammar schools work as opposed to going to a comprehensive!

I'm waiting Yawn.. Please, what're your personal reasons for your abhorrence of grammar schools?

Grammar school results hinge on one factor alone...intake, intake, intake.

You put a load of kids whose performance in within the top quartile of the ability range and what do you get?

Good job then that the 11+ in NI had its last outing this year and ceases from September, 2008.

For the reasons why, see the research that was carried out prior to the decision being made.
