I cant help you with the German Abitur but I do know that roughly 60 people got 45 points last year out of 22,000 students. You do the math

A 45 IB ist definitely better than a 1.0 Abitur.
1.0 in the Abitur means your average mark is 14 p, IB 45 says your average is about 15 out of 15, I think!
I'm not sure about that but I know that there are far more people with 1.0 ABI than people with 45 IB..

You can't compare the grades from two systems directly. Similar to how A-levels can't be directly translated to IB points.

wow, and my ib coordinator wonders why 17/2000 people in my school do full ib diploma program. (11 seniors, 6 juniors) -and at least 2 arent gonna get the diploma because of CAS!

In my school, there are about 17 people who don't do IB. Everyone does IB and only a small portion don't get their diploma cuz they are retarded!

You cannot compare systems. Please stop doing it. It will lead us to futile arguments.

I won't start a lengthy debate on this, but calling people retarded for not taking the full diploma is just idiotic. Ever heard of the theory of multiple intelligences?

Getting 45 in IB is definately much harder. The IB is generally a much harder course, compared to the German Abitur (look at the percentage of people who get 45 points in IB, and all the extra requirements CAS, Extended Essay...). Thus, the German Abitur wont be much use to you unless you want to study in Germany or Austria.

Except that my course-mate is German and got into (reputedly) the most academically-oriented college at Oxford via Abitur

The "extended essay" you are talking about also exists in the Abitur, if you can even call it THE Abitur. Abitur as a general test taken by every German pupil doesn't exist, education is managed by the "bundesländer" and therefore a 1.0 Abitur in Bavaria or Rhineland-Palatinate is more worth than the same Abitur in Bremen.
I don't know...it really depends...I guess...it's your decision...

A 45 in IB cannot be compared to any other system. The IB Diploma is by far the hardest system I know (especially if you take HL Maths, Physics and Economics).
you can compare systems i think. IB 45 is harder to achieve because fewer people achieve it. AAA at A level is not hard otherwise only 60 out of x number of thousand taking the qualification would get it. the fact is that most sixth forms will have a number of students getting AAA but not the same proportion achieving 45 points. Similarly to the Arbitur, though i know little about it i'm sure if someone could give a percentage of how many get this 1.0 we could say whether it was easier or harder to achieve than the IB.
45 points is overrated. It shows you are very good at regurgitating information. Big deal, Einstein would never have gotten 45 points, yet we remember him far better than some twit who did.

That's not true....45 in IB is anything but regurgitating information (well, maybe in Biology and/or history), evenso, if the only ability you have is regurgitating information, you'll never get to the top.

Einstein wouldn't have gotten AAA neither, unless they are all sciences. You can't compare successful people to those who do well in school, they're not THAT relevant. Bill Gates is a dropout (harvard dropout, but hey, a dropout nonetheless). Hitler's stupid AND lazy, yet he's one of the most well known dictator.

I agree that it is overrated and unnecessary...but it is not something you should disregard or disrespect.

I agree with talespirit in the sense that a student who manages to get 45 points in IB is a well-rounded student.

However, taking Biology HL, I would not say it is regurgitating information. You need to take in so much information, that it requires learning rather than memorising at the end of the day.

Yes... i agree, because at the end of the day, you'll have to process that information and write reports as well. The whole IA and things like the English commentaries where you can't prepare beforehand is what makes it different to other systems that base things on revision alone.

Good for you. When you realize you are wrong and mature a bit I recommend you read Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. That should enlighten you slightly.

So she's wrong and immature because she disagrees with your point of view? Sorry mate, but if that's the way you see things your world must be very narrow indeed.
