VM450 - Wind Power Motion 2017, TSR Green Party

This House believes that, in light of recent figures, the Government should put a greater emphasis on wind power and build several more offshore wind farms. Figures for offshore wind from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy recently revealed that two firms were willing to construct offshore wind farms for the price of £57.50 per megawatt hour for 2022-23. Being a renewable source of energy, wind power has several advantages over its more popular alternatives such as oil and coal in that it no harmful polluting gases are produced and there are no fuel costs. Furthermore, this latest report also demonstrates that wind power is cheaper than nuclear power, which costs approximately £92.50 per megawatt hour to set up. Therefore, we implore the relevant Secretary of State for Energy to examine the evidence closely and develop a long term energy strategy that contains a heavy emphasis on wind power.

It makes no sense to be as reliant on expensive and unreliable power as the author suggests.
