1. Hmmm. Well it's certainly demanding. I just finished my second POP assesment today. Stimulating? I suppose so, it depends what interests you. All of the modules so far are good, none boring topics.

2. Well when I applied last year, the TIMES reported York as the 4th best uni for computer science in the uk. That has gone down slightly, but will certainly rise again once the new department is built on the east heslington campus. In terms of uni's in general, I think york fairs very well.

3. Haha, I hate the maths module. Our first maths module was ICM and it mostly boolean algebra and sets, I don't consider it 'real' maths and it's annoys me that I struggle with it. In the spring/summer term, I'm told we will be doing core maths, so that will be more pleasant.

4. Depending on your course, the module choices don't take place untill the 3rd/4th year I think.

5. Job prospects are good, and even better if you take the sandwich, course which most people do. You get to work for a year in industry, earning money (and your student loan) and getting work experience at the same time.

What about the workload? Do you get many individual/group assignments, courseworks and so on? Do you need to study much on your own?

Reply 3

Ozy? ICS is interesting? lol

Reply 4

Wouldn't you recommend york for CS usar?

Reply 5

I would, it's No 4 in the country, and it's very good. The first term is pretty boring though, but I suspect that's the same for most other universities.

Reply 6

I need to think about that, I will se what happens to my other choices. Got unconditional offer from UCL yesterday...

Hello there,

I would like to ask all applicants and current students for their opinions and feedbacks about York Uni in terms of CS.

1. Is the course stimulating and demanding? What is the workload?
2. Is York comparable to Unis such as Imperial, UCL or Bristol?
3. Does CS programme contain good Maths modules?
4. Are there any optional modules to be taken?
5. What is the job prospect?

Thanks in advance for all your replies.

It's stimulating and interesting. The workload is high, but certainly not as high as certain courses such as chemistry demand.

York is second in the country according to the Independent, 4th according to the Times. It's comparable to Imperial, and definitely better than UCL and Bristol.

First year Maths modules for the straight CS course focus on discrete Maths (required for logic), probability and automata theory. I'm not sure about the joint CS/Maths course though. You have to bear in mind that at York you'll get a BEng or a MEng, so you should expect it to be more focussed on computing rather than Maths (go for a BSc if you want a more maths oriented course)

In the second year you get a choice between electronics or human computer interaction, and in your final years you get a lot of choice.

The job prospect from York is amazing. Remember it's one of the top University's in the country, not just for CS, and there's a dedicated industrial placement person who does nothing but get jobs for York students at CS firms. Definitely if you take the placement year, but even if you don't, I know final years who are already being approached by IBM.

Does anyone have a clue, how york looks like regarding investment banking?

Reply 10

Sorry to go slightly off from what Bober is asking, but I thought rather than start a new thread I would post here. I'm coming down for an interview on the 19th. Can anyone give me any information on the interviews themselves? eg. Can maths/logic questions be expected?

Bober: If that's where you want to go, I get e-mails from investment banks all the time. You can't do a placement year with them though because the banks don't let themselves get accredited for you to do a year out there.

Naval: Yes, expect them. Nothing too taxing though.

I had one such question but it wasn't very difficult.

Laser - what are you studying and what companies contact, if you can tell of course.

Reply 14

I'm studying straight Computer Science.

I tend to delete all e-mails from investment banks because it's something that doesn't interest me, but he's a screenshot from the Job pages on the Computer Science student website:

Hehe, that looks quite nice, made my day actually as I got unconditional for that uni

One more thing, about the timetable. How many hours are to be expected during the first year/term? I found one timetable on the website and it estimated around 30 is that true?

Reply 17

Campus press estimates it at a 35 hour work week (that's about right - you're supposed to do 10 hours work per credit, and there are 40 credits over 10 weeks).

Because I'm feeling really nice, here's the first year timetable for the first term:

(You only need to attend one practical per module, there's about 2 per module listed there, and you only need to attend one tutorial per week - the ones in green)

You really are nice guy, contrary to what people say

5. What is the job prospect?
96% of graduates get a job if I remember good. Don't have data with me though.

BTW You will be taught Java instead of Ada during Year 1.
