I don't know about being a student as I am only just applying but I have been a perminant resident of Birmingham all of my life and would have to say Harborne is a nicer area.

Its all bout Selly Oak.

Goose, Gunnies, Bristol Pear, Soak, Aldi, Selly Sausage and the godsave 24hour tesco express when your desperate for food or pissed up @ gunnies and need a quick bite more healthy than he kebabs.

Harbourne is a nicer area, you won't be near any other students though and it'll take ages to get to uni. Live in Selly.

Reply 4

Yep, unless you're at the medical school, Selly Oak is infinitely more practical. Not such a nice area, but the huge amount of students/bars/the swimming pool/Sainsburies makes up for that. :smile: I miss it. ;-;

Yeah but i heard selly oak people get broken into like left, right and centre..

Reply 6

That's why you get insurance.

If you know where to look and invest enough time into the process, nice houses aren't that hard to find in Selly Oak. Safe ones too, I wouldn't be put off by the reputation too much. Though you'll probably find more upmarket property in Harbourne, theyre not really convenient for getting into Uni every day (unless you're a Medic), and you'll find there are a whole lot more people you know in Selly Oak for your second year. As a small tip, I'd avoid Dale Road and the houses round there, and the closer to Bristol Road the better if you're going for houses on Dawlish, Tiverton etc, even if the houses do tend to get bigger the further you go up.

selly oak is the only real option.

harborne is 12 miles away from campus and has a student population of 56, approximately. it also has 7 shops.

selly oak is on the campus' doorstep, has a student population of thousands and has bristol road, which makes 408% more revenue than the bullring and mailbox put together. there are quality boutiques there and some great spots for fine dining (chamone and the selly sausage for example).

Haha, there are more than 7 shops in Harborne mate. Theres about 7 pubs! :p: Try the harborne run sometime.

Live in Selly Oak, Harborne isnt all its cracked up to be, trust me. If u think parking in Selly Oak is bad, check out the harborne side streets. If your scared of reverse parking in a tiny gap between two fiestas, how you gonna feel doing it with a porsche and a bmw. It aint fun.

Ok, Selly Oak isn't all that good as I've said, had my CD player, CD's and PDA stolen when someone broke into my car last weekend. :frown: ******s...

Still, I've had damned good times there and can't wait to move there next year!

Reply 13

Why did u leave your PDA in your car?

Reply 14

I went to get a Subway for 5 mins, the PDA was locked in glove compartment and the skillful 'tards managed to get into the car and to the box. All sorted now anyway in terms of insurance.

Selly Oak is a DUMP. I spent last year their and absolutely hated it. Would much rather find somewhere maybe a bit further but quiet, clean and pleasant.

Reply 16

You're talking Harborne or Edgbaston then.

Reply 17

It's all about Selly Oak!! Harbourne is a very affluent area. As a student, I don't think you'll be able to rent a shoebox in Harbourne let alone a flat. lol

Reply 18

No you can get a really nice house in Harbourne for cheaper than Selly. You just won't be near any students and further away from the uni. I guess if you're a boring loner it would be ok.

Rubbish, in Harborne it's possible to rent a much bigger house for less money than the equivalent in Selly Oak. Most of the houses in Selly Oak tend to be terraced and quite small whereas in Harborne the houses available are often huge and semi-detached or detached
