Sixth form Colleges manchester

Hi
I'm in year 11 and live in manchester, and am looking at sixth form colleges for next year. I've looked at Xaverian, Holy cross, Bury college and Pendleton college, and they all seem nice. If anyone has been to any of these or knows anything about them and could tell me I'd be very grateful.
thanks:smile:

If it was me I would look at Xav. HC or BC.

narrowing it down I would choose Xaverian or Holy Cross.

It would then depend a little on travel time to either, If it was the same then ,maybe Holy cross.

If you are into music then goto Xavarian they have the best music department that i know of. My friends that went to Xavarian have either dropped out or aren't doing as well as i expected them to. My brother said the same with his friends who went there.

thanks for that, I have been to the open days for the colleges, holy cross and bury are probably the nearest to me, holy cross looked nice but it didn't seem like they give you much freedom.

Bury is supposedly very nice, but it was way too far for me to travel, I have to get two buses to my own college, if you want to travel MANCAT's brilliant, but I think it's classed as a further education college.

Thanks I did consider MANCAT but it doesn't have the courses I want to do.

What are you looking to do? I didn't think that MANCAT did my courses as the websites not the best, but I went into the campus and was told that they did indeed do the course, which confused me but here I am doing it.

I know that MANCAT aren't the biggest on A Levels as they're mainly focusing on Vocational and Further Educational courses I believe, but take into account that they're 'merging' with City College therefore will possibly have an even wider variety of courses available.

I was hoping to do english lit, english lang, and possibly history and RS. I didn't think MANCAT did those courses, but I suppose I could go in and ask. Whan are they merging with City College?

Technically they're merging next year from what my tutor says, but it may take another year to fully integrate everything properly.

They do English Language & English Literature.
They do History.

I'm not entirely sure on Religious Studies (I believe that is what RS stands for?) but there are quite a few religious facilities at all of the campuses as there is a wide variety of religions so it would seem stupid for them not to do it, when i'm next in on Wednesday I will ask my tutors if they know and PM you, but they teach ICT and Computing so i'm not sure if they will know.

Bury are pretty poor for high achievers. Go to Xaverian or Holy Cross.

Xaverian or Loreto

I think you should try the grammar schools, Bury/Bolton Grammar (ask your parents to get their wallet out lol) or BRGS.

I'm in my second year at Xaverian, I love it. If theres anything you want to know just ask

I'd advise Holy Cross, as I go there:P
You do get freedom to an extent, it has a lot more freedom than a school, the teaching levels are fantastic. They do push you and are probably stricter than a normal college but to be fair I think many people need that. They let you do anything except fail basically.
You get a lot of frees and everything, as there are 7 periods in a day, and you can basically go anywhere during them. They don't allow you to just miss lessons but thats because its for your own good really. And in the AS year you have to go in as soon as college starts no matter when your lessons start, but basically, believe me, you get used to it and in the end it is very beneficial.

The teaching styles are good too, and you'll get all the support you need. As long as you're a good student they're pretty stringent, just don't let you run wild. And the enrichments are quite good, but at the beginning of the year it seems like they're **** :P but they're enjoyable ones and they're ones which can look impressive on your CV and personal statement but won't affect your work.

But its up to you, I'm just biased towards them :P I'd advise it though.

I agree very much with what Jessaay says; I do think that Holy Cross has a good rep., and the structure/ support is there to help students acheive at their highest level. As I said earlier I would choose Xav. or HC; I didn't go to either myself, my grandfather (now deceased, but would be in his 90's !!) is a Xaverian old boy from the days when it was a Grammar !!
