Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday that it would allow women to drive, ending a longstanding policy that has become a global symbol of the repression of women in the ultraconservative kingdom.

The change, which will take effect in June of next year, was announced on state television and in a simultaneous media event in Washington. The decision highlights the damage that the no-driving policy has done to the kingdom’s international reputation and its hopes for a public relations benefit from the reform.Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, is a Muslim monarchy ruled according to Shariah law.

Saudi officials and clerics have provided numerous explanations for the ban over the years. Some said that it was inappropriate in Saudi culture for women to drive, or that male drivers would not know how to handle women in cars next to them. Others argued that allowing women to drive would lead to promiscuity and the collapse of the Saudi family. One cleric claimed with no evidence that driving harmed women’s ovaries.

A win for women's rights in one of the strictest countries in the world!

Well it's good that the women can finally put all their practice into good use:

Jheez I didn't think it was possible for these people to think so progressively... Who knows, maybe one day they might stop chopping peoples heads off.

Most women there don't wanna drive anyways, they'd rather have a private driver so they can chill in the back seat.
ISOC must love this. Now they have some extra fodder for the next time they want to defend the 'progressiveness' of Islam.

Of course it's possible... We used to cut peoples heads off too remember. These countries will eventually work themselves out it just takes time.

Mate these Islamic countries are still stuck in the ****ing 7th century. We'll be living on Mars by the time they reach the 19th century lmao. And the human race will be long gone before they ever reach the 21st
Wonder what the head choppers will do next? Maybe allow other people to openly worship and follow their faith.

About time those patriarchal pricks
A few centuries too late
So sad that we have to celebrate this in 2017. It's progress, but a lot is needed still to even get SA close to other countries in terms of human rights and freedoms.

How is that different (in terms of the concept) to giving someone lethal injection or assisted suicide?
