AS Level maths Chapter 6 help please

the line with equation y=4x-1 does not intersect the circle with equation x^2+2x+y^2=k. find the range of possible values of k....
So far I have got :
X^2+2x+(4x-1)^2
X^2+2x+(4x-1)(4x-1)
X^2+2x+16x^2-4x-4x+1
17x^2-6x+1
B^2-4ac (discriminate formula)
(-6)^2-(4x17x1)
36-38
=-32
I'm unsure if I'm solving it correct... Please help
Thank you in advance:smile:

Your substitution is correct but you forgot the = k from line 1, so add it to line 4 and then see what to do from there
