At most universities you buddy up with your new friends and look for a private house to share, usually around the end of the first semester/start of the second. A few unis offer second years the option to apply for halls again and an even smaller number (think Oxbridge) guarentee a uni owned room for the second year too but this is the exception not the norm.

Most universities need you to move out of the University accommodation in your Second year as the same is only reserved for First year students. You can choose to stay with your friends in a student accommodation off campus. Now there are a lot of purpose built student accommodations (PBSA) that are built along the same lines as university halls and will give you the same sense of community since you will be living with other university students. They have all the bills included in the rent so you do not have worry about remembering to pay the same each month separately. You also get a ton of facilities such as games room, study rooms, cinema rooms, gym and so much more so that you can come home to relax in style. These accommodations are better than choosing private houses where you have to take care of everything yourself such as maintenance etc. PBSA’s also have round the clock security so all you have to worry about is focusing on your coursework.
