Job at WHSmith

I recently handed in my CV at WHSmiths and then found out some friends of mine had been asked for an interview. I( was a little annoyed because I hadn't ben asked so I rang to follow up my CV. They said that I may have been called for an interview but if I wasn't in they just didn't call again and just went on to the next person. Is this normal when you apply for a job as I think it is a little harsh

Yes thats happened to me a few times. it is harsh that they dotn have the curtesy to even notify you of the rejection.
It would not be normal practice for a higher end job, but a job as a shop boy/girl with a large form like this would not call for many of the normal good maners expect from a firm.

WH Smith is a failing company anyway. If I want a game I go to Game (its cheaper) if I want a CD I go to HMV, MusicZone or Flop. If I want office stuff I go to stationary box, if I want a magazine I go to my local newagents, if I want a drink I go to a other shop (WH Smith charge 95p!).

WH Smith may have a place in small towns but I think in the city the shop is a bit dated as it just can't compete any more.

PS If I want a book I go to Waterstones.

Also WH Smith are evil since they stopped the student discount.

There is a big Fopp in Manchester City Centre, as well as Music Zone (the UKs largest indedent record store chain). There is also loads of record shops in the northern quarter part of the city centre.

PS I thought Rough Trade was the record label the Smiths were signed to?

yup, as Ian said, goto the northern quarter and you'll see all the musos in the independent music retailers, trawling through their mountains of obscure, barely organised collections.

You don't want to work for WHSmith anyway mate. They are such a rubbish company to work for - treat their staff like dirt - perfect example; previous posters' friend being denied one saturday off to attend an extremely important open day which could be influential on the rest of their life.

WHSmith simply do not value their staff, your just another small cog in the machine that is there to be manipulated to their advantage and your detrimant. Take my advice and go find another company to work for - one that actually values their staff .... I did.

I knew there was a Music Zone in Manchester, but I didn't know there was a Fopp...i'll be able to get rid of any spare money easy enough then!

It is, but they also have 2 great little shops in London, they do alot of harder to find music, lots of import and vinyl stuff...great range, especially considering the size of them (one of the shops is in the basement of a Skate Shop!)

yeh that is true. i worked for them 2 years ago. everytime i was working at the till i used to look up and the manager was watching me like a hawk, like i was going to rob them- no trust at all.
at christmas my mum gave me some money to go and get christmas shopping, so i decided to get it from whsmith. i spent over £100 on dvds, videos, books etc and the manager was like ''how can you buy all that on your salary!!!'' he was raging.

It is a little bit hidden, do you know where the Tesco Metro is in Market Street? To the left of that is Brown St and Fopp is down there. As longs as you know it is on Brown ST you will find it as you're not likely to pass it otherwise. I only knew it was there because my mate saw it.

DON'T WORK FOR WH SMITH!

My friends do and they think its the worse job ever.

Does that make you feel any better!
I also applied at WHSmiths and all I got was a bit of paper saying 'sorry, we aren't looking for staff right now'. I'd actually applied at the time they were taking new people on, so I was a bit miffed. But whatever, life goes on.

Indeed. Not many companies actually value their part-time employees though. Who'd you work for?

omg dont work for WHSmiths - count yourself lucky!!! i worked there for a year and ahalf and they messed me about so much.
- put me down for hours without asking
- generally unfriendly atmosphere
most recent being, cutting the pay and reducing staff discount without telling anyone till about a week to spare
so glad i left
