What a stupid thing to say! All the rapists don't live in Southampton..they live all over the place!

Yes there are a few rumours of rape etc around, but no more than you would usually find in a town!

Umm dunno what freshers week your friend heard about because mine certainly didn't!
& even if it did it would be with a certain society which you would choose to go to.

Southampton has it's fair share of chavs etc. But no more than most places

but....really?

Reply 3

It's no worse than other places.
I have no idea where your friend got their information, but I wouldn't take it too seriously if I were you.

southampton is actually quite safe crime wise compared to other cities. you have to remember it is a city and coming from a village myself you do need to reassess certain safety situations but i promise its nothing to be worried about at all. the worst thing about soton is probably.......how busy west quay (and primark) gets sometimes, and also that because we're not in the NUS some shops kick up a fuss about student discount, but most major retailers accept the soton card. i really, truly, honestly can't think of anythin else bad. except maybe burgess road and the flowers estate. oh and jesters toilets. and jesters wine. and the glen reception people (grumpy as sin!) lol

So yeah....Title says it all. I've heard that at Southampton uni you get raped :s Is this true? Also, the fresher's week includes.....bi-curious activities!! Has anyone else got anything bad about Southampton as my friend is really unsure and has heard lots of rumours about it!
Jesters is the worst, but in a kind of good way (i.e. dirty and cheap), thing about Southampton. Sometimes specific parts of Burgess road at night can be a bit dodgey. A few of the chavs come out on weekends, but I personally haven't encountered any confrontations as such. The town I'm from, St Albans, has more, dangerous, chavs than Soton. That's all really, for me.

I don't think there's a rape issue at all (certainly not at the uni). Soton is a city, there will be rare ocassions, but that occurs nearly anywhere. I was pretty active in fresher's week, but I did not hear anything about 'bi-curious activities'. I guess if you're looking for it you'll get it?

Anyway, since you're applying to Nottingham, I could ask the same to you. Are you not afraid of the 'apparent' gun-crime reputation it has?

Bicurious activities? You mean LGB?! Of course they have activities they are a society like anything else.

Don't be silly.

PS: My friend who's 2nd year at Essex also heard you get raped there but so far she's been disappointed.

I think the worst thing is the kids hanging outside the chip shops with knives but you get them almost everywhere.

A couple of my flatmates got stopped by a couple of idiots waving knives around about 6 months ago. One got cut on his neck and the other managed to duck out of the way. Someone called the police about it and they said that there was nothing they could do because there's no CCTV cameras down Burgess Road.

Eurgh.

What a ridiculous thing to say! Unfortunately there are rapists in southampton, just like there are in EVERY OTHER CITY/TOWN IN THE UK no doubt!

Yes there is an LGB society but I very much doubt they run 'bisexual taster events' which is what you seem to be implying but then again I wouldn't know as I am neither L, G or B for that matter and therefore haven't had anything to do with them. Just like I've not had anything to do with dodgeball soc, or showstoppers because they're just not my thing. Grow up and stop trolling!

I would say the worst thing about Southampton is trying to get in to town when there is a match on/the boat show/christmas shopping peak as it's hell on wheels!

Where I lived about 3 years ago, just walking around at night is a life or death situation with the amount of gangs. This is in East London in a place called Walthamstow. Anyway, we moved out of that craphole and as long as the place I goto doesn't resemble it in the slightest, I am happy.

yes, everything you heard is true

*goes back to raping*
the traffic lights

Reply 13

I would say the worst things about Southampton are (in ascending order), the nightlife (or lack thereof), the traffic lights on Hill Lane, the Flower estate and worst of all, Shirley.

Reply 14

No nightlife?! Wtf!?

You got a problem with shirley you got a problem with me

Dont walk in the parks when its dark and you will remove 98% chance of getting raped.

With the exception of The Hobbit, I think anyone who spent their teenage years attempting to go out in Southampton at night would agree the nightlife is absolutely shocking. And I don't really have that much of a problem with Shirley, although my %%%%%%%% of an ex does live there which lowers the tone considerably

I'm not a clubber (har har) or drinker but there seem to be laods of bars and clubs

If there was that much demand for it then i think other places will have opened.

the traffic lights

ditto, defo one of the worst cities to drive in. All the traffic seems to be diverted on to a few single roads, traffic is awful.

Reply 19

soton has officially the most traffic lights per square mile in the UK!!

as for the nightlife i think people who grew up in soton had it lucky! i came from a good sized town and we literally had 2 wetherspoons, and 2 nightclubs. take a look around at other unis, and out of my 5 best friends, 4 of them have all said they literally only have the SU and maybe 2 other bar/clubs. at least in soton theres clubs to go to.
i can understand it can get a bit repetitive, but i find thats because i go out so much thers not going to be an infinite number of new places to go!
