How do I write the electronic configuration for an ion that differs from an atomic configuration in chemistry?

If it's a metal, it loses electrons to get a full outer shell.

If it's a non-metal, it gains electrons to get a full outer shell.

e.g. Li has atomic config 2,1 and Li+ has ion config 2 as it lost an electron to get a full outer (1st) shell
