I don't know show to show that to x+y=sqroot 3 cos

    I used cos2 + sin2 =1
But equally that I got there is not cos
As I made sin and cos as a subject and the sub .....

Remember that you can use addition formula for cos(4t+\pi /6) so you can expand it out in terms of sin(4t) and cos(4t).

Just checked it and x+y \neq \sqrt{3} \cos(t) so the question is invalid. Simple counter-example: t=0 and the two do not match.

Looks as though part (a) should be asking you to show that x + y = 2sqrt(3)cos(t).

Suggest you have a go at that, using the identity for cos (a + b).
