I am interested in studying interior design at university next year. I know I need to present a portfolio for my interview. I have never studied interior design before so have no work to show other than my own drawings. I just want to know what I can include and whether it needs to be designs I have created or research or what

Your own drawings and sketches should be a good start. Try to work in some drawings of 3d spaces from life (so not from photographs) - maybe drawing the same space from lots of different angles/positions. You could also think about making some theme boards/ideas boards for spaces to add into your portfolio. Also if you have any opportunities to work on textile designs then that's often a positive addition - mocking up what a textile design would look like used as curtains/cushions/upholstery etc. None of this is essential - follow your interests
