Key skills - functional skills

Hi all, wondering if anyone has any experience of doing a nvq level 3 and using there old key skills qualifications from a previous nvq as a substitute for functional skills . I don’t want to have to retake them if I don’t have to however some are saying they expire but then online it says they are exempt from the 5 year rule. Any help appreciated thanks in advance
