Why is this a question? Of course they do, competition has never been so fierce and they need to be able to differentiate between candidates in many ways. How else are you going to tell them about the work experience you've done (if you've done enough of it and what you've learnt from it) and why you want to be a doctor? TSR has really gone downhill.

Each medical school is different. Some schools place considerable emphasis on the personal statement to determine which students to call for interview (ie: Cardiff and Bristol) while others only use it to distinguish between borderline candidates (ie: Newcastle and Kings College London). It is important for you to do your research on each medical school and apply with your strengths, whether that be your personal statement or not.
