    Hi,

I am an undergraduate medical student who is thinking of taking a year out of my course to intercalate and obtain a masters. I haven't decided if I will be pursuing a masters at my current university or a different institution.

I am currently in receipt of the full maintenance grant and tuition fee loan. Will I be eligible to receive this support during my year out?

Will the year out affect the support I get for the remaining years of my degree?

Does the institution I do my masters at affect the support I can get?

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi nnoley,

An intercalated year can be studied on a different course at a different University or College.

Postgraduate qualifications can be studied during an intercalation year.

They do not attract undergraduate support.
These courses can be funded by the Postgraduate Loan (PGL)

If you are going to be in receipt of a healthcare or social work bursary you won't be eligible to receive a PGL as well.

You will find further information on the PGL here

If a qualification is gained you will be entitled to a maintenance loan only for the remainder of your course due to holding an ELQ (reduced rate maintenance loan for any years you are entitled to apply for a NHS bursary).

    Thanks Rona
