I am currently in my third year and have failed to make any proper friends in my first two years of undergrad. I am your typical quiet and shy girl and struggle with making new friends. There was a sports fair a week ago in my university and I found the hill walking / mountaineering society quite interesting, and they are having the first socials of the year today in the evening (a bar crawl), and most of the people who will be showing up are experienced people and will probably know each other. Having not participated in any of the clubbing/drinking culture, and not being particularly athletic at all, would it be very awkward for me to join the pub crawl? Should I show up to a few of their mountaineering events before joining the social scene of the club? Thanks

Check the event and society out on social media. There might be a lot of freshers going who won't know each other, or if there doesn't seem to be then maybe ease your way in gently.
