is newcastle racist? a students outlook

ok. i have an unconditional offer from Newcastle. however i have heard that the city is very racist, and so i dont know whether or not to accept the offer. when i went for interview i didnt find the interviewers, or anyone there for that matter, racist at all. but i dont want to be living the next 5 yrs of my life under racist threat. this thread might sound a bit pathetic but i just want some views of students already in newcastle, or anyone for that matter

No it's not. I go to newcastle (well South Shields to be precise and i'm brown) every summer and the people are cool and laid-back. Of course if your ethnic, whatever you do ... DO NOT WALK INTO A PUB WEARING A SUNDERLAND FC TOP. The last guy (who was white) who did that, nearly got killed.

But still, Newcastle is a vibrant city. Fit girls, and the metro-centre (Europe's biggest shopping centre with an indoor theme park    ). Yeah they're are loads of white people (far more i've ever seen lol) but i'm sure the uni has different soc's for different nationalities.

Haway man! Chill-out eh?! :p:

I have lived in the North-East all of my life and I'm unsure as to where the stereotype has come from? I've never heard of any racist incidents that highlight Newcastle as more/less racist than anywhere else?

In brief; you'll be fine there.

Congratulations on your unconditional offer!

And TBH, I don't thin you could class a whole city as racist. Naturally, there are factions of racism, but screw them, live life, and don't let them put you down!!

Well, usually there's 4 or 5 of them, and they have baseball bats, so that could prove a little tricky.
I guess that does make things harder. :s-smilie:
there is a huge amount of non white people in newcastle especially at the university. there is a huge number of chinese students in particular but also lots of students from all over the world. infact just off northumberland street (the main high street) there is a non christian place of worship (not exactly sure which religion it is). and obviously the students come from all over the country and these are the people you will mix with most.

It's not racist at all!

Just drunken and loud.

pmsl! Judging a whole city by some unfounded rumours you've heard! Now who's the one being prejudiced?

There are many rumours such as this. I can understand where they come from. Newcastle has traditionally been a white dominated city with a large working class population. However, racism is a very rare occurance (anyone who says it doesnt happen anywhere is lying) and there are few cases of it. The city is very vibrant and multi cultural. I was amazed at the number of geordies at the Chinese new year celebrations in February.

If you are still concerned, our racial equality officer is called Mike Oliver and has run many successful events including a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King's honorary graduation.

I haven't seen much racism at my time at Newcastle Uni. The only discrimination I really see is anti-mackemism, anti-rahism and anti-soberism.

Don't let a crazy stereotype keep you away from the most fun city in England!
I've not experienced any racist behaviour so far (Im asian). People seem friendly most of the time. There was a case where a first year girl left after a few weeks due to racist incidents though. But apart from that, I cant say Newc is racist.

It's probably based in the election of BNP councillors around Sunderland way.

Either way, racism = , Newcastle =

Pah, that much is rubbish. They make me go and have fun, practically force me to have too much of their brown ale and then I get a headache. :frown:

Bloody geordies, always leading poor innocent saints like me astray...
pfffffffttttttttt. Blaming your drinking on the locals, whatever next???

Anyone on here going for Freshers Crew. Applications and Interviews happen around March time. Don't know exactly when but it's usually fun
My step parents family is all chinese and they live in newcastle and ive never heard of any problems really other than the odd stare.

i asked this same question this time last year, cos i'd been told all sorts of stories...infact the first thing anyone ever said to me when i said i was moving to newcastle uni was (wide-eyed blank stare)...woman, you're gonna get battered them people are racist!

i confirm that this is the biggest amount of bull i've heard..its an amazing city, the people are ace and drink prices, well...i agree with mattye, the locals make you do it, you can't help but have fun!! plus (depending where you're from) there's chinatown if ur chinese and need ur food, there's an african food store on westgate road (i think thats the name of the road, :s-smilie: i should know really i'm a frequent visitor there lol) and quite a few asian food shops so really ur alrite...i mean you do get the odd strange man tellin you he loves coloured women :s but that just adds to the experience!! dnt worry bout it...unconditional offer?! get urself down here...well up here :P x
