IMO I feel stalin contributed immensely to the terrible defeats in the first years of the eastern front, via his decimation of the army high command and officer corps through the purges AND putting the USSR on the backfoot technologically by massacring top scientists and intellectuals. Yet on the flipside he did manage to industrialise and effectively rearm the soviet union which eventually took the ussr from a agrarian society to a superpower.
I fell overall he had a positive effect on the ussr on the whole.
