When you buy your first car from a private seller but you haven't had previous insurance and haven't bought insurance for that car yet, how would you have a test drive and how would you drive the car home if you decided you would like to buy that car, even without any insurance?

    You don't.

When dealing with a private seller, you either buy short term insurance, or don't drive the car - simple. Dealers usually have trade insurance which can cover you for a test drive.

If the owner lets you drive the car, then you can drive it but you must be insured to drive the car home. If you can't drive it yourself, get someone else to drive it. Most insured drivers have policies that include third party insurance to drive other peoples' cars.

You can get a quote and then pay for it on the phone before you drive it home.

Only if you have insurance to cover you...
