By which I mean is it safer to apply for the BEng when applying to engineering courses (as they often have lesser entry requirements)?

Or will you be offered the BEng in any case if you fall short of MEng requirements?

If the BEng has lower entry requirements then it may be safer to apply for it than the MEng. Not everywhere will offer the BEng if you fall short of MEng requirements (but still meet the BEng ones), it's very much an individual university thing.

I don't know about other unis yet but nottingham sent me two offers, one for MEng and one for BEng. (i've applied for MEng)
so far, the other uni that sent me an offer has not mentioned the BEng offer, so it's implying to me that they're only giving me the MEng offer.

It is safer to apply for BEng. You can change to the MEng once you are at the university if you perform well in your first couple of years.

Usually you will be offered the BEng or just be admitted to the MEng if you miss the MEng requirements but meet the BEng ones, it literally makes no difference to them which one you're on, but being admitted to the MEng initially is simpler for student finance purposes than being admitted to the BEng then transferring to the MEng.

That said, if the university is in a situation where they've overrecruited then they would be well within their rights to reject you in that situation. It's an unlikely situation but perhaps one worth taking into account.
