My lecturer for one of my classes keeps offering bonus points for answering extra questions.

As an example, he puts a question up on the board and the whole class has to put the answer into their phones on a website.
After everyone has answered, a scoreboard comes up saying how quickly everyone answered and if they were correct.

He then gives the person at the top of the leaderboard a “bonus point”.

It seems quite strange and a very competitive way to learn.
He also sent out an email saying that one person who got a bonus point has won a free meal with him...

I don’t mind doing the extra work - just concerned about what the bonus points mean

Is this a normal thing? And will the points count towards my final mark?

Doesn't seem normal to me especially the free meal thing (creepy?) but it's unlikely it will count towards anything important if this hasn't been made explicit to you. You should know exactly the breakdown of how your course will be assessed and if you don't know then ask him/head of the department.

    Thank you! It IS creepy!

Thanks for that, that's what I assumed but I thought I'd double check.

Hahahahha, that's the strangest thing I've ever heard.

My disso supervisor would meet with students at her house, which was odd enough, but that was in numbers. A one-on-one meal takes it to a whole new level.
