Freshman 15

In America they have this phrase called the Freshman 15 to refer to when people start university they usually gain about 15lbs straight off because of the lifestyle change. I would've thought it'd be the other way around, I mean you can barely afford food and you're too busy to eat sometimes so I thought you'd actually lose weight- what does everyone think? Is the Freshman 15 myth true?

Yes you're right and there are tons of obese people here, but I've never heard of 'Freshman 15.'

Well, it can happen. I mean, imagine living on £1 chicken-and-chips every day.

Yeh I would have assumed it was the other way around too what with us students not being able to cook well and being lazy its a nightmare situation.

I would have thought that it could happen from all the alcohol in fresher's week, and in the first term the whole 'budgeting' idea not really sinking in, and curry/chips/fry-ups to get through hangovers could pile on a few.
Also perhaps if you've been used to visiting a gym and then not going when you move to uni...

for me i was so scared i couldn't afford anything other than essential food, that i lost weight! (oh, combined with the obligatory stressful break-up.. )

sadly my mind since realised i have enough money for emergency ice cream/chocolate bars, so put it all back on & probably some more from exam period comfort eating! damn..

I know what you mean, when I started a new school in year 9 I was so nervous about everything I wouldn't eat anything all day, not even at lunch, I'd pretend that I normally didn't eat much and wasn't hungy- I lost about 20-25lbs. And yes, as soon as I fell into a comfortable group of friends and starting actually enjoying school- it all piled back on
