I want to apply to do creative writing at one of my city's universities but on their website it says "Subject specific requirements: Prefer English Literature, English Language, or English Language & Literature" and I'm a confused as to why it says "prefer". Does this mean they'd prefer me to have done one of those A-level subjects, but it's okay if I haven't done them or do I HAVE to have done one of these subjects? I wanna know as I haven't done any A-level subject to do with English, but I'd still like to do creative writing. Also, since I haven't done A-level English lit/lang, would I be able to get into the course with my GCSE English lit/lang results?

Prefer means that it's optional. You should contact them to get an idea of how much of a disadvantage not having one of the preferred qualifications puts you at.
