When copper reacts with oxygen they form copper oxide which is black in color. This is just one example. Transition metals dont just form white or red coloured compounds, they form many colored compounds

Transition metals make coloured salts. This is one of the characteristics of transition metal salts.

But watch out for anhydrous transition metal salts - these will be white. There is nothing in your question to suggest the salt made would be anhydrous.
