Why does Russia have higher levels of snowfall compared to the UK?
The climates (and therefore snowfall) of the UK and Russia are influenced by 2 main factors: latitude and continentality.

The UK lies between approximately 50 and 60 degrees latitude, whereas much of Russia is between 50 and 70 degrees latitude, meaning that parts of northern Russia lie above the Arctic Circle. Therefore, the climate in this region is extremely cold.

Because the UK is surrounded by water, the oceans are able to moderate the climate, giving much of the UK a continental maritime climate. The influence of the Gulf Stream bringing warm water from the Caribbean also means that UK air temperatures and humidity are higher than they would be if the Gulf Stream didn't exist. In contrast, Russia's large size means that most of it simply has a continental climate, since the surrounding ocean has little effect on the continental interior (however, there are exceptions to this!). As a result, the Russian climate experiences greater extremes in terms of temperature and precipitation in the summer and winter months, with winters being generally harsh with high amounts of snowfall.

    I hope that helps
