Study Abroad @ Oxford?

Is such thing possible at all? I have check the university website it seems to me like it is only limited to some departments...I thought that it might be cool to spend one year out in somewhere else...Is it possible? Btw I got an offer for Engineering =))

If no, (or if you feel like answering) what about it vice versa...I mean most of the Ivy league schools offer study abroad programs at Oxbridge..Are they extremely extremely selective or does it depend on the school you go to (in the US)? Also how does it work? How do you get a degree etc.. Thanks..=))

From the Engineering Sciences website:

"Some opportunities exist for overseas study in the final year, either as part of an exchange scheme (e.g. with Princeton University, USA) or in the form of a six-month placement."

I get the impression from that description that it's not something too many people get to do. You could always email the department and ask what kind of opportunities are available, and how many people choose to study abroad.
In chemistry there's an exchange with Princeton but only for students of a certain inorganic laboratory. Hence if you dislike Inorganic you can't go.

um, the only exchange programmes i know of at oxford are with princeton.
Stanford send lots of students for a year to oxford, and you can always apply directly as a visiting student- although you'd need to check with your home university whether they'd give you credit for it.

If you were to apply as a visiting student at Stanford, would you be paying the same tuition fees as you do at Oxford, or would you abide to the international student fee at Stanford?

My friend was studying at Smith and she spent a year in Oxford at LMH

Nally...Was it way too competitive for your friend..and is she going to get a degree from only Smith...and if so what about her grades at Oxford...(it is even more confusing since I was told that there are no graded exams until 3rd year at Oxford)

There are many ways to apply to study for 1 yr at Oxford and you do not have to be a student at the school that is offering the exchange program (although no doubt they probably give preference to their own students). According to the web sites, and students that post on college confidential you just have to have OK marks (GPA) at your current uni and be willing to pay the $35K fee. e.g. Sarah Lawrenece college study abroad program, http://www.slc.edu/oxford/Application_Process.php
Arcadia, Butler, and I've forgotten many of the others that also offer them. You need to apply now for next fall.

Eek, autumn please. Especially seeing that you are going to Oxford, the bastion of Englishness.

As far as I could understand..Goin to Oxford for 1 year with one of those Study Abroad programs is not that big of a deal...and doesnt mean that much? Its not prestigious etc and its just going to somewhere different for a year?

There was a girl on TSR (Shady Lane) who had been at Oxford 6 months (whatever that means, it could mean from 1 to 3 terms but she never told us) who kept boasting about "her time at Oxford". So I suppose it is very possible to brag about it, if that's what you mean.

She didn't keep boasting about it in the slightest. She just pointed out that she wasn't talking out of her bum when she made comments about the libraries, the tutorials and the general atmosphere because she HAD studied here.

Are there any opportunities for Oxford undergrad students to go abroad to American Ivy League's like Harvard (for E&M)?
Reply 14
Absolutely.. you just have to apply and should have good grades.
Visiting undergraduate student Program.
Just search the web sites for any of the US unis that you might want to apply to - I'm pretty sure that most of them offer it..

Not really. While other universities might be happy for you to visit for a year, oxford has very few opportunities for you to go- notable exceptions are the exchanges with princeton for physics, history and a few other courses.
If you were desparate, you could self-rusticate (suspend your degree) for a year and go do what you wanted, but it'd be a bit of an extreme (and expensive) course of action.

But what about the people who defer for a year due to personal reasons?
Reply 17
Well yeh but what sort of personal reasons would then involve you going to America for a year? ^o)
See, that's the thing that annoys me about Oxford. They are extremely restrictive about our choices. At any other university, if I felt like I needed some time off, or would like to go to Harvard for a year, it would be fine.

Here, if you want a year off you'll be threatened or allowed under the condition that you get a first in your exams.

You what?! If you NEED time off then they give you time off, and they're generally very good about it. But who randomly decides in the middle of their degree that they fancy a break unless they have a reason? Other unis aren't more relaxed about it, they just have more programs in place.
