Hi, I've just started my PGCE and been given the task to write an essay on the purpose of education and being a reflective practitioner, being a maths graduate I am seriously struggling!! Writing essays isn't my best thing to do and I'm really struggling to find any suitable literature that I could use to reference in my essay, any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

Google articles on the topic. Look at references they used. Copy the references

https://scholar.google.co.uk/ is your friend. And hopefully you should be able to add your uni as a reference in the Google Scholar settings meaning you can access a tonne of literature.

Bare in mind that Masters level writing needs to include your opinions too. Be sure to critique the reading sources you choose and bear in mind that 99% of educational studies are complete and utter bilge with no randomisation, self selected and self reporting data and often no viable control.

When you start getting into your studies properly, a fantastic go-to book is John Hattie's Visible Learning. Don't buy it though. It will be in your uni library and you can also pull off the values online although the explanations of the values are only in the book.

    Good luck!

In all of your assignments, I would suggest using the teachers' standards as well as the national curriculum where possible.

I have checked my maths specialist assignment, in which I achieved a solid first, from last year (I'm doing a BEd) which does look at being a reflective practitioner.

    Two good ones include:

Schön, D. (1983) The reflective practitioner: how professionals think in action. New York: Basic Books. - which was highly recommended.

Korthagen, F. and Wobbels, T. (2001) 'Characteristics of reflective teachers', in Korthagen, F. (ed.) Linking practice and theory: the pedagogy of realistic teacher education. London: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Publishers, pp. 131-148.
