Hi,I am currently studying a BTEC in applied science at my sixth form college but i want to study astrophysics at university (of Manchester) however i also need an A*/A in a level physics and maths and am looking at completing both these a levels in a gap year through a distance learning provider and i am more than capable of doing both of these in my own time, however for the a level physics there is a practical assessment that can be completed however it is not needed to complete the exams and get the a level. My question is will missing the practical assessment stop me from getting an A or A* in the exams and will it discourage a university from taking me on board?

In terms of will the practical part count towards your grade it doesn’t, (at least not for ocr and I believe that’s the same else where) you get a grade eg A in the papers which makes your a level grade you then can get a pass in the practical endorsement which has not affect in your grade.
Regarding how this will affect Unis I’d suggest you check the entrance requirements and see what it says regarding that. As most courses say something along the lines of there must be a pass in the practical element of any reformed sciences.
If that’s the case you could contact the uni and see what they recommend for someone in your situation and you could try contacting your sixth form to see if they would allow you to sit the practicals.

    All the best.

Not completing the practical won't have much of an effect on your grade. However, questions will be asked about the practicals in your papers depending on the exam board. In addition, for Manchester you will need to complete the practical endorsement and you need to pass it.
