# Physics Question in latent heat of fusion GCSE watch

1. Using a 40 w heater, 16.3 g of ice is melted in 2.0 minutes. The heater is then switched off. In a further 2.0 minutes, 2.1g of ice is melted.

In order to do this calculation, the mark scheme does this
16.3g -2.1g = 14.2 g is done
But WHY?????

But WHY?????
The ice also melts without the heat input from the heater. It does so through the heat transferred from the ambient environment. For example, it could be located in a room whose air temperature is above freezing.

i.e. the total melting (heater + ambient) = 16.3g

2.1g = ambient melting

16.3g - 2.1g = 14.2g is the amount of ice melted by the heat input from the heater alone.
