Worried about findin a job

I seriously need a part-time job when i join Uni as my parents have told me that they will support me financially but only 50% of my total expenses the rest i shall have to arrange on my own. My parents aren't that rich and they want me to collect some money as well as obtain some work experience (which will be very helpful in the future) along with my studies. I do not want to let my parents down as they have supported me so much and encourage me to go to Uni inspite of having some financial constraints...
What should I do to get a good part-time job? I would like to earn 150 pounds per week (I know its a bit exaggerating) so that my parents don't need to worry about any expenses at all...
Please give me some advice,
Becky

Go for the obvious, work in the union at one of the bars/shops/coffee shop things during the day.

Uni's suggest no more than 15 hr weeks though, as not to interfere with your studies so you'll do well to get £150 p/wk.

Other than that, local supermarkets should have vacancies, as all of their summer temps will have either moved away across the country to go to uni, or gone back to school.

Nottingham's a big city, there'll be loads of opportunity, you've just got to be prepared to wander round a bit, and maybe rely on some public transport.
i heard that sainsbury pay £10 per hour, from 9pm to 7am, which is 10 hours, night shifts

Nearest Sainsbury's is at Staveley in Chesterfield, or at Ripley. NO CHANCE for Becky of travelling there every day.

And imagine the state she'd be in the next morning, pray for no 9 AM lectures.

Can I search for a job before joinin Uni or is it only possible when i get there?

You're so right Expression i wouldn't like to work at night cos that means I wouldn't be able to make it to my lectures.. so night shifts are a no no..

I don't really know myself, I'm starting at Sheffield in a couple of weeks, don't know know exactly - I'd guess close to £5 per hour though, which is a useful £65 per week at 15 hr average.

Would suggest you just look when you're there - I doubt they'd be advertised.

Local cinemas too might be able to be somewhere for you to work as well - couple of hours on a few nights/afternoons. Theres plenty of those around the city.

Just a matter of asking someone - remember to get in early though, cos they'll be plenty of other students looking, and you've got Uni of Nott'm's bunch to compete with too.

Oh yea im gonna have to be an early bird! I hope there is no discrimination against Notts Trent Uni :frown:
5 pounds per hour (i dunno know how to make that pounds sign on my keyboard) isnt that much but i will have to be satisfied with what i get!
Something's better than nothing! Do they deduct tax from ur weekly wage?

£ sign is Shift+3, (3 on the number bar, not the number pad on the right)

There won't be any discrimination against NTU, there can't be - but I'm just saying there's two big Uni's in the city, not the one, so you gotta be quick.

For the age, and the fact it's likely to be a low skilled job for now, (chance to improve position later on maybe - start as union bar staff, and by the third year you might be bar manager?!), and can't expect masses, but as you suggest, every little helps as a student.

at tesco i think the night shift hours were 10pm - 6pm (So an hour less each way).

Also mr monk, or however i need to address you in the future, you are going down on the saturday (20th) are you?

As chance may have it, my best mate happened to apply to the same uni so I am probably going out on the first day there to get a feel for the local life.

My mate will be in the flats right next to yours as well, he is in woodvale.

What subject are you doing by the way? I'm sure I know this but its kind of slipped my mind at the moment.

I'm now living 100% independently from parents at uni  - working a lot over summer on £6/hr, plus other bits n pieces where it goes up to £20/hr. We're not officially allowed to work during termtime at Oxford (& there's not enough time neway), but my £3000 loan covers accommodation + food, the stuff I've earned over summer covers the rest.

i would avoid having a job if i could help it. i just dont like working (in an unskilled job anyway), i enjoy day dreaming. im going to be very frugal and make my student loan stretch as far as it can go, and concentrate on my uni studies instead. i am at an advantage tho as ive just started a gap year so hopefully ill be able to save a grand or two before i start, should allay any initial pressures at least.

You're lucky you've got a loan but I won't get any loan as I'm not from UK. Though I will surely try to get a job in summer as well and work my a$$ off then!!!
