I live in West Croydon and I go to Queen Mary University of London in Whitechapel. I currently use the 18+ oyster card (pay as you go) but I am saving no money (its the same as the regular oyster card). I don't really understand what the 16-25 railcard is but I take the Overground. I'M just really confused. What is the cheapest way to travel? Any help will be very much appreciated.

If you travel most of the week, you should consider getting a monthly/annual Travelcard with your Oyster. Just cover all the zones you travel in and you'll save a lot of money. This also includes Overground and bus fares.

The 16-25 railcard saves you 33% on National Rail journeys and costs you £30 a year. This will also include Overground journeys

Either option will save you money.
