    The base has two hydrogen ion equivalents, eg carbonate

    The first inflexion is:

    H+ + CO32- --> HCO3- (note that no carbon dioxide is released at this stage)

    The second inflexion is:

    H+ + HCO3- --> CO2 + H2O (now carbon dioxide is released)
