Im currently in year 12 and I am taking 4 AS levels (Chemistry, Biology, Maths and English Literature). The original plan was to drop maths at the end of year 12 and carry on with the rest in year 13. However the workload is too much and maths is driving me crazy! I was wondering if I was to drop my maths AS now, instead of at the end of year 12, would I be at a disadvantage when applying to university because I only have 3 AS and not 4? Would they favour someone with 4 AS over 3?

For a very few unis then they ask for 3 +1 AS. Check the entrance requirements for the course that interests you. Its slightly less impressive 3AS but 3 ood ones is better than 4 mediocre. You only need 3 A levels just make sure they meet the grades and you will be fine.

If you look on unistats then you can see what entry grades people had who got onto the course. You can get an idea whether they had 3 A levels or more from the scores. If its too much then drop one.

I'm not aware of any that do now, since the A-level reforms kicked in.

Dont make me look it up, but have definitely seen some that require you to have 3 + an AS. I cant remember whether its a particular uni and a particular course. I will tag you if I see it again.

I think UCL did until last year. Happily tag me up if you do find one

    How about this.

It says expectation not a requirement and you need to read the wording t see how the AS comes into play. Not he one I was thinking of but it illustrates how more than three can be relevant.. I mentioned it to the OP because ive seen it before but only on a few occasions. It would have been inaccurate not to mention it.

I'm struggling to read it on the app, will double check tomorrow. But it does seem to say you won't be disadvantaged.

can you add a link to the source page... ta!

    Sorry browser crashed.

Its not the example I was thinking f and the wording was stronger.

In this case it says not disadvantaged, but the other side of the coin is its and advantage to have one. In this case If you have one then they will ear in mind what grade you achieved should you fail to make the offer on 3.
