I want to do an essay on the picture of Dorian Gray, but I’m worried it’s either really overdone or not appropriate for the EE. Alternatively, I’d be interested in “never let me go” but the worry here is that the book is too modern and I won’t have enough resources to go off of. Are either of these books appropriate?

Both r really good. You have better chances of "originality" if you choose Ishiguro's novel -- never mind the resources because the EE does not require this, esp. for English. PM me if you need more. That's all I can say now.
