Sorry don't agree - they are a new driver and in my eyes it was a mistake they made which they won't be doing again.
The 'mistake' was completely forgetting everything they had been taught. Spatial awareness, reversing, mirrors etc. It's not even clear why they decided to reverse in the first place...

OP - a tough (and expensive) lesson to learn. I hope you can get your confidence back and get back out on the road. Please remember what you've been taught. Drive like it's your test each time.

I'm actually nervous that there's drivers like you on the roads. Parking sensors aren't the be all and end all. You NEED to be checking your mirrors. What if someone had started crossing the road behind you? You'd have no idea and you'd have hit them.
If you think this is bad, just imagine the future filled with those damn driverless cars. When people do need to drive they'll just be even worse!

I agree with IWMTom. If you sympathise with people like that, then they just won't learn.

It's blunt yes, but it's the truth. And in situations like this, the truth is better for OP's sake.

Mistakes happen OP, but learn from your mistakes. If you don't know how to drive properly, then it's maybe worth taking some more driving lessons.
