I just want to start off by saying, I really love music and it my biggest passion in life and it is all I want to do with my life but I don't take music lessons in or outside of school, although I'm only 14 at the minute, I'm making my subject choices soon and I desperately want to do music. I play guitar, bass and drums but I'm self taught. I can still play quite well and I was wondering if you HAVE to have done grades in your instrument or if it's something to do with capability. I've been researching careers in the music industry but I need a music GCSE to get into Uni to do it. So do I need to have gotten to a certain grade in the instrument or can I just be self taught? I am capable of reading music easily so I was just wondering. If you could help me out, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

You don't need to have done grades in it. Infact, someone in my class who was self-taught got an A, so it really makes no difference. The only difficulty I can think of is when it comes to the difficulty of your pieces, as it's easier to assess the difficulty when you do a graded piece. But other than that, you should be fine.
