I was diagnosed with Cholesteatoma in my right ear a few months ago, which is a benign growth. However, it has destructive qualities and will literally eat away and erode anything it touches, including my hearing bones, facial nerve and potentially the brain. The pain has literally been unbearable, my face twitches occasionally, so hopefully there will be no long lasting damage to my facial nerve. I'm going into surgery tomorrow to have it removed, the operation will be done through an incision into the mastoid. The consultant has estimated that I will be in theatre for around 6 hours because my MRI scan showed excessive growth, I'm so scared

Has anyone else suffered with Cholesteatoma or had a Mastoidectomy, please share your experiences?

I haven't been in your situation however I just wanted to say try and stay calm. You'll be in very good hands and the surgeons will be very experienced. Try not to panic, and instead focus on all the positive things that you'll get out of this surgery, which will be successful. No pain, right? That's got to be a great thing to look forward to.

I'm trying, but my consultant said something to me a few weeks ago, which really hit home.

My Dr said that the main priority of the operation will be to reduce the disease to achieve a clean and dry ear however, preserving my hearing will be second to this. So I could potentially lose hearing in the ear, which is already poor anyway. Like you said though, I need to focus on the positives.

Geez! Good luck; I'm sure it'll all come out okay. They know what they're doing.
