Art journals and how to write in them, what to contain etc...

Basically I'm considering my options here and I heard that for some art schools you can get in by submitting a portfolio of your work. (I do sciences and computing for a-level)

With art journals; I would hypothetically need one for life drawing (probably just contains drawings and no analysis - idk please help), one for projects and one for research for art styles, right?

so whenever I research an art style or an artist - I would need to analyse their work and create a response - but how would I make a response, and how do I analyse my research in an artistic manner?

thanks for your help!
I don't know a lot about applying to art school but I think that your response can include things like artist studies (recreations of some of the artist's pieces) and researching the themes used by the artist and how the might have been linked to his life and time period that they lived in; you can also create a piece inspired by some of the elements that the artist uses.
