    Preferably not generic ones like Tess etc, also - would you class 'Call Me By Your Name' as a tragedy?

    If not Tess, how about the darker and even more pessimistic Jude The Obscure? 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' is a wartime tragedy, while McEwan's 'Cement Garden' has elements of tragedy.
