Okay, so I've been living with my housemate for a little over a year and he's liked me as more than a friend for most of that time. We've both been quite open about it, so it hasn't been in anyway awkward, but then today he asked me out for a date....

Now, he is completely unsuitable as a partner (smokes, drinks, used to do drugs, not good with money, etc) but he does treat me really well and I do get on with him, so some kind of short term/fwb arrangement wouldn't be completely off the table.

The question is whether it would be too cruel for me to agree to date him, knowing that I'll be leaving and moving on to other things next year? I'm wondering if it would hurt him less if I don't get his hopes up?

By all means, go on a date but you should let him know what you really want (long-term, short-term, FWB, etc..). That will clear up any confusion beforehand and no one gets hurt.
