Why is TSR harassing me to turn off my adblock extension?

Isn't this a non-profit site run by volunteers and content created by users?

For the same reason every other website do it: so they can keep their website free and running

Web hosting and development costs money. This has to come from somewhere. Non-profit doesn't mean "run it into the ground", it just means they aren't making a profit for shareholders etc, not that they aren't making any money whatsoever. They do need to plough that money back into the platform to be considered a non-profit however - which they do.

Also every advert I've seen on this site has been university related, and half are either for the unifinder service this website runs, or UCAS itself. The rest are just random universities from the UK.

Because users don't pay they need money to run the site. Not for profit doesn't mean everything they do is free for them. It costs to run the servers, pay the staff etc. Ads allow them to do that without asking you for money.
Ads let them keep their site free. If they didn't use ads they would have to ask users to pay.

So basically you have a choice between ignoring some ads or paying real money yourself. Which would you rather do?
