Just curious, why can you only get an A* at A level and not at AS and in the individual modules?

Because when adding the A* grade to UK A levels to recognise the highest level of full A level performance it was decided that it would only be awarded at the overall qualification level and not at unit level or AS level.

The A* is calculated differently to the other grades as well, so it make sense for it to only be at the full qualification level.

to add onto the others, a "notional" A* boundary (ie. 90% UMS) was often given for A2 units, but the maximum grade attainable would still be an A. Of course, now it's all linear, with boundaries assigned using raw marks.
