Mate, AT the weekend or ON the weekend

Poll

AT vs ON the weekend

Alright this thing sometimes annoys me, and now it really annoys me..

I have always been saying AT the weekend, but now I have got a flatmate who insists the correct way of saying it is ON the weekend..

Also, things like Easter and Christmas... AT Easter and AT Christmas for me, but my flatmates all say ON Easter and ON Christmas, which now really annoys me and they all try to convince me their way is right - because there are three of them.

What do you say?

I think both are correct. I use either depending on the situaton.

Isn't ON the weekend what North Americans say?
You can't be ON a weekend. But you can reach the weekend.

At. :u:
All of them.

Both? For example, I say "at the weekend", but you don't say "At Friday", you say "On Friday". So I think it is down to the context

I say "on Christmas" to mean "on the 25th December", whereas I say "at Christmas" to mean a more general December period.

I've always said on the weekend but now that I think about it, it depends on the situation and context.
