    Hi,

I'm really struggling to name these molecules, particularly with how to include the phenyl group in the name. It would be great if someone could show me the steps to do this correctly.

Also what is the best place to start when naming more complicated molecules?

    Thanks

Assuming that's your notes around the left hand structure?

You're on the right track, identify the highest priority group and the longest chain for it, so Pentanoic Acid is the base, ketone substituent is labelled oxo when not the highest priority, but there's an extra carbon between the main chain and the aromatic ring, so it's a benzyl group, not a phenyl group.

Right hand structure, identify the major functionality, and remember that for position, bonded to the nitrogen in the amide linkage is labelled as N.

    Does that make it "2-benzylmethyl..."

    No, it'd be 2-Benzyl-4-Oxopentanoic Acid.

Or is this one of those where us flavour chemists use antiquated names (like Allyl rather than Propenyl in the other molecule, or how I'd want to refer to that as Valeric Acid)?
